Changing cooling fan clutch on 7.3 diesel

Estimated Time: 30 minutes

Tools Required

  • Fan clutch wrench
  • Holding tool
  • 5/16 socket or wrench
  • 13 mm socket or wrench
  • Air hammer with a blunt punch

Parts Required ( if applicable )

  • Replacement clutch

Step 1: remove coolant holding tank(3, 5/16 bolts), and move to the side. Do not remove hoses from tank unless you are draining the coolant.

Step 2: remove 2, 5/16 bolts from top of fan shroud.

Step 3: Using fan clutch wrench on hex part of fan shaft, and holding the pulley with holding tool, turn fan shaft counter clockwise. If it moves, good you can skip the next step.

Step 4: If it is stuck, and it normally is, then using the air hammer, hit directly on one of the flats of the hex several times with a blunt punch. Now it should come loose with clutch wrench.

Step 5: Pull fan and clutch assembly up and out while lifting the shroud at the same time.

Step 6: Remove bolts holding fan to clutch, and swap fan onto new clutch. Then you can reinstall the assembly in the reverse order of removal.
